Rooted in Story. Rooted in You.
Rook & Fern Co. is a child and family emotional development consulting practice. We help children express what they feel, and help the adults who love them understand what it means—through play-informed, family-centered, developmentally grounded support.
We partner with parents, educators, and early learning communities to build emotional literacy, regulation skills, and relational safety—without rushing growth or forcing one-size-fits-all solutions.
Our Story & The Beginning
Rook & Fern Co. exists to help children express what they feel, and to help the adults who love them understand what those feelings mean.
We work at the intersection of child development, family life, and education — offering play-informed, family-centered consulting that helps children, parents, and educators build stronger emotional and relational foundations.
But Rook & Fern didn’t begin as a business plan. It began as a story.
Richard and I first crossed paths long before we realized how closely our journeys would intertwine. We later met again in high school while serving as peer tutors, working alongside teachers and students in a special education classroom. Supporting classmates who communicated and learned differently taught us early that connection, patience, and presence were just as important as instruction.
We were both drawn toward children who didn’t always fit neatly into existing systems — children who needed more time, different approaches, or adults willing to slow down enough to truly listen. That shared perspective shaped both our relationship and our future work.
As I moved into my professional career in early childhood and developmental psychology, those early lessons resurfaced again and again. I began noticing patterns that were difficult to ignore: classrooms stretched thin, teachers asked to carry enormous responsibility with limited support, and families often left disconnected from what happened during the school day. When developmental or behavioral strategies were introduced, they rarely translated smoothly into the home environment.
Children were being underserved, educators overwhelmed, and parents left trying to bridge gaps without guidance.
At the same time, I saw similar disconnects between education, medical systems, and family life — each working hard, but often working separately. There wasn’t a space that brought all of these worlds together in a way that truly supported children and families.
So Rook & Fern Co. became that space — a place where families, educators, and communities could meet in the middle, and where children are understood rather than simply managed.
My work is grounded in graduate-level training in child and adolescent developmental psychology and play-informed approaches, but it is equally shaped by lived experience. Years of working alongside children, educators, and families — along with my own experiences navigating neurodivergence, health challenges, and nervous system regulation — have deepened my understanding of how stress, environment, and relationships shape development.
Richard has been beside me throughout this journey, encouraging, questioning, and learning right alongside me. His perspective often balances mine, and together we approach challenges from different angles. That partnership continues to influence how Rook & Fern solves problems — thoughtfully, collaboratively, and with humility.
Our work is also deeply rooted in family legacy. My grandmother Sus, whose compassion and dedication to children left a lasting mark on me, played a significant role in guiding my path toward supporting young children and those with additional needs. Her influence continues to echo through this work.
Over time, academic study, professional experience, military service, and personal growth layered together, shaping a shared belief: that growth is relational, behavior is meaningful, and families deserve support rooted in understanding rather than judgment.
Rook & Fern Co. reflects that partnership — grounded in steadiness and sensitivity, structure and creativity. Our work honors pace, nervous system needs, and the reality that meaningful growth happens when people feel safe enough to move at their own rhythm.
Today, Rook & Fern Co. serves as a bridge between home, education, and emotional development, offering support that is thoughtful, developmentally grounded, and deeply respectful of the whole family system.
That shared story didn’t just shape us as individuals — it laid the foundation for how we work today.

The Heart Behind Rook & Fern Co. (Our Philosophy)
It all began quietly - with one simple hope: to create a space where growth doesn’t have to rush.
Rook & Fern Co. was born from the belief that families, educators, and children deserve support that feels both grounded and genuine - a place where connection comes from correction, and where curiosity is the starting point for change.
My work is grounded in developmental psychology and the belief that play isn’t just for children — it’s how humans learn, connect, and make sense of the world. I approach every interaction with the understanding that growth happens through relationship, not reaction.
Whether I’m consulting with a center, guiding a parent, or supporting a child, I lead with curiosity before correction and connection before compliance. I believe behavior is communication, and that our role as adults is not to control expression, but to understand it.
Through my training in play-informed and child-centered approaches, I’ve learned that play is a child’s first language. Listening is our most important skill. In practice, this means creating environments where emotional safety, sensory awareness, and regulation come first. I draw from evidence-based developmental principles such as attunement, reflection, and co-regulation to help children feel seen, while equipping caregivers and educators with tools they can use in everyday moments.
My approach blends the science of developmental psychology with the artistry of presence. It is both research-informed and heart-led — shaped by work in attachment, neurodivergence, and nervous system awareness, and guided by empathy, intuition, and rhythm. I believe learning and growth take root when story, safety, and self-awareness are allowed to grow together
How We Work
We approach our work through a developmentally grounded, relationship-centered lens. Rather than focusing on quick fixes or surface-level behaviors, we take time to understand the child, the family system, and the environment surrounding them.
Our work is collaborative. We partner closely with parents, caregivers, educators, and organizations to observe patterns, identify strengths, and better understand what a child may be communicating through their behavior, play, or emotional responses. This process allows us to offer insight and practical guidance that feels relevant and usable in everyday life.
We use play-informed and child-centered strategies to support emotional expression, regulation, and connection. Sessions and consultations are designed to feel supportive and responsive, honoring each child’s pace, sensory needs, and developmental stage.
Above all, we believe growth unfolds best in environments where safety, curiosity, and consistency are present. Our role is not to diagnose or treat, but to guide, translate, and support — helping adults feel more confident in how they show up, and helping children feel more understood in how they express themselves.
Meet Kierston
Kierston Hernandez is a Developmental Psychology Consultant and the founder of Rook & Fern Co. Her work centers on supporting children’s emotional development while helping parents and educators better understand what children are communicating through behavior, play, and emotional expression.
Kierston brings together academic training in child and adolescent development with play-informed, child-centered practices. She has spent years working alongside children and families with diverse learning styles, emotional needs, and nervous system profiles, particularly those who benefit from slower pacing, relational support, and environments that honor individuality.
Her approach is shaped by a deep respect for developmental timing and the understanding that regulation, learning, and connection are inseparable. Kierston leads with curiosity before correction, recognizing that behavior is meaningful and that lasting growth happens through relationship rather than reaction.
Kierston’s work is also informed by lived experience and a strong awareness of the body’s role in emotional regulation and communication. This perspective reinforces her belief that slowing down is not a setback, but an essential part of creating safety, clarity, and connection for children and the adults who care for them.
Through Rook & Fern Co., Kierston partners with families, educators, and organizations to create supportive spaces where children feel understood, and adults feel more confident, grounded, and equipped to respond with intention.
Meet Richard
Richard Hernandez brings a grounded, steady presence to Rook & Fern Co. and focuses his work on supporting veterans and men navigating trauma, stress, and life transitions. His perspective is shaped by military service, lived experience, and a deep respect for the challenges many men carry quietly.
Richard is particularly attuned to the ways trauma and chronic stress show up in the body, relationships, and day-to-day life. He believes that healing and growth for men often begin with safety, trust, and practical support — not pressure to talk before they’re ready or perform strength in familiar ways.
Within Rook & Fern Co., Richard works with veterans and men to build grounding skills, restore a sense of stability, and reconnect with their own internal signals. His approach emphasizes presence, consistency, and resilience, offering support that feels accessible, respectful, and rooted in real-world experience.
Together, Kierston and Richard approach their work as partners, holding space for both individual and family systems. While Kierston’s work centers on children and caregivers, Richard’s focus supports the men within those systems — recognizing that strong families and communities are built when everyone has access to understanding, regulation, and support.
Richard’s work with veterans and men will continue to expand through dedicated programming, workshops, and community partnerships.
How did you come up with…
The Name: Rook & Fern Co.?
The name Rook & Fern came to life during a season of slowing down — a time when I was learning what it meant to rebuild from the inside out. I kept returning to the two symbols that felt like us: the rook and the fern.
The rook — clever, steady, and fiercely protective — reminds me of my husband, Richard, and of the grounded kind of strength that doesn’t shout to be known. The fern — soft, ancient, and quietly resilient — reminds me of myself, and of the way growth happens in the dark, long before we see it.
Together, they became more than a name. They became a promise: that strength and softness can exist side by side. That love can be both anchor and adventure. That what’s rooted in truth will always find a way to grow back toward the light.
Rook & Fern Co. carries that meaning in everything we create — a reminder that care doesn’t have to be complicated to be powerful, and that every story, no matter how tangled or tender, deserves a place to belong.
Let’s work together.
